Rhodolite takes its name from the Greek word rhodon meaning “rose” and lithos meaning “stone.” It is not technically a species in its own right, but rather falls between pyrope and almandine. Though gemologists would classify garnets based on laboratory testing to determine exactly where a particular stone falls on the scale, most dealers simply classify any garnet with a predominantly purple hue as rhodolite.
Rhodolite was first discovered in 1882 in North Carolina, USA. Although those deposits have since been depleted, new deposits have been identified in Brazil, Zimbabwe, India, Sri Lanka and Tanzania, the latter being the major commercial source.
Rhodolite is the most expensive of the garnets in the “red” colour range.
The word “garnet” is derived from the Latin word granatum, meaning “seedlike” because the uncut crystals in their natural form are reminiscent of the seeds of a pomegranate.
Garnet has a long history, reaching back through the eons as far as 3100 BC Egypt, with a more recent hay-day in 18th and 19th century Europe. Until the late 1800’s the world’s major source of pyrope garnet was Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic.
