HALF MOON PENDANT #1

This pendant was manufactured from fine silver using the plique-a-jour enamel technique. Plique-a-jour is French and translates to "light of day" referring to the fact that the light is visible through the glass panes, just like a lead glass window. First the pattern is pierced from a sheet of metal. It is polished and cleaned. Then the enamel, which consists of glass ground into a fine powder, is suspended in water and built up in the empty cells with paint brush. This technique can only be done by hand and requires multiple firings in a kiln at temperatures exceeding 700 degrees Celsius to accomplish. After firing the excess glass is ground away with a stone, and the metal components are polished.
The pendant was finished with sterling silver o-links, is 25 mm wide and 15 mm long (excluding the o-links), and has been fitted into a 40 cm chain which can extend to 45 cm.
