Known colours: Gold-yellow (heliodor), yellow-green, green, gray-green, yellow, pink, colourless (goshenite).
Mohs Hardness: 7.5 – 8
Precious beryl: This term refers to all colour varieties of beryl which are not emerald, aquamarine or morganite.
Beryl is brittle and sensitive to knocks but hard enough to withstand regular wear.
Goshenite: A colourless variety of beryl named after Goshen, Massachusetts, where the first deposits were found. Can be used as an alternative to diamonds.
Heliodor: Golden yellow to lemon yellow. There is some disagreement in the trade as to what should be classified as heliodor and what should simply be called golden beryl. Named after the Greek sun god Helios, it stands to reason that heliodor should be the colour of sunlight.
Technically morganite is counted under precious beryl (like goshenite and heliodor), and not identified as a variety on its own (like aquamarine and emerald), however, due to its recent increase in popularity, this is slowly changing.
