This lovely 36.63 carat natural ametrine exhibits colour zoning of both purple (amethyst) and yellow (citrine).
Ametrine is the perfect stone for someone for whom the months of November and February bear significance, since it contains both the official birthstone for February, and the alternative birthstone for November.

Also known as trystine or bolivianite, ametrine is a colour zoned variety of quartz crystals, which contains both citrine and amethyst.
There are only two known sources for this unique gem, though most of the commercial stones originate from Bolivia, where it was first descovered in the 1980’s.
The zoning occurs due to temperature changes during the growth of the crystal, with the citrine portions containing oxidized iron, while the iron in the amethyst segments remains unoxidized.
Ametrine can be created artificially by beta irradiation of natural citrine, which itself is often created from heat treated smokey quartz or amethyst. This sometimes produces material with greenish yellows or blueish purples. Natural ametrine does not exhibit these colours.
The colouring in quartz crystals (even when natural) are sensitive to light, especially sunlight, and heat, and therefore care must be taken when storing these gems.
